Budgets and funding

Why fund FMR?
FMR presents experience and analysis, new ideas and new perspectives, lessons and recommendations for action.

FMR aims to:

  • contribute to improving policy and practice for people affected by forced migration
  • provide a forum for the voices of displaced people
  • be a bridge between research and practice
  • raise awareness of lesser-known (or little covered) displacement crises
  • promote knowledge of, and respect for, legal and quasi-legal instruments relating to refugees, IDPs and stateless people.

Two of our biggest budget lines are printing and postage. We could save money by posting FMR online only but FMR’s availability free of charge in print as well as online is key to its accessibility by people all over the world in countries and contexts where internet access is still restricted or non-existent, expensive or slow. Publishing FMR online only would severely curtail our ability to facilitate debate and learning within the international humanitarian and research communities.

Although housed within the Refugee Studies Centre of Oxford University, FMR is a semi-autonomous project dependent on raising its own funds for all of its work. We greatly appreciate – and need – the support of a range of external donors in enabling FMR to do the job it seeks to do.

Meeting our costs

Our budget for the University of Oxford's financial year 1st August 2023 to 31st July 2024 is £300,050/ US$405,068 / €375,063 (exchange rates at University's current standard budgeting rates).

We seek two main types of support:

Core/unearmarked funding: Unearmarked funding is needed throughout the year to fund production of FMR issues and to cover salary and office costs. One-off or multi-year contributions of any amount are welcomed.

Issue-specific funding: If a donor is particularly interested in a forthcoming feature theme, a donation may be allocated specifically to that issue (and will be acknowledged as such in the issue). See our forthcoming themes.

We welcome online donations of any amount, whether from individuals or organisations. We are also very happy to provide formal funding proposals. Please email the Editors at fmr@qeh.ox.ac.uk with any suggestions about possible funding sources.

Donor visibility and reporting
All current and recent donors are acknowledged in FMR in all languages in print and online, and in the funding reports of the Refugee Studies Centre and the University of Oxford. Issue-specific donors are additionally acknowledged on page 2 or 3 of the issue, online and in all supporting promotional material.

FMR liaises closely with donors over use of their funds and will discuss opportunities for profiling and acknowledging their support, recognising that ‘core’ donors may also wish to benefit from the additional profile offered by a closer link to a particular issue. Donors receive multiple copies of FMR for their own use, and narrative and financial reports.

All financial transactions and accounts are approved by the University of Oxford’s Finance Department. The University of Oxford is an ‘exempt’ charity under the UK Charities Act of 1993 and as such FMR can receive charitable donations.
